The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
